about

the artist

upsidedownhead is the electronic music project of Sydney-based producer and songwriter Ross James. Blending dusty samples, left-of-centre electronic production, warm melodies and rhythms made for movement, his music sits somewhere between intimate headphone listening and the dancefloor. What began as an outlet for experimentation has developed into a catalogue of collaborative, emotionally driven recordings that resist settling into a single genre.

The project emerged in 2018 with “get low”, featuring longtime collaborator Ric Rufio. The track introduced a sound that was playful and slightly off-kilter, setting the tone for the debut EP, complex, released later that year through Liberation Records. Written and developed around James’s work as a touring musician, complex drew attention from triple j and Australian and international music media, establishing upsidedownhead as an artist interested in finding unexpected beauty in electronic music.

Over the following years, James expanded that world through a series of collaborations. “open the sky” with Tom Snowdon, “to give” with Parissa Tosif of Vallis Alps, “make it real” with Fractures and “twice as tough” with Mansionair each brought a different voice and character to his productions. The 2021 EP lush continued the exploration, featuring contributions from artists including Clea, Hein Cooper and Ric Rufio, and leaning further into the meeting point between soulful songwriting and electronic textures.

Following a period of change and a move back toward independent releases, James teamed up with Jack Froggatt of Mansionair under his Elmar moniker for 2023’s “make it right”. The song received support from triple j, SiriusXM in the United States and streaming playlists. He also worked with Boo Seeka on “Somebody”, continuing a run of collaborations that bridged his own project and his work as a producer for other artists.

In 2024, “hold on” introduced another side of upsidedownhead’s sound. Built around the feel of an old record and a quietly insistent groove, the track responds to a world of uncertainty, from conflict to climate anxiety. Its central message is one of togetherness and perseverance: a reminder to keep going even when things feel overwhelming.

That thread of optimism carried into the self-titled upsidedownhead album, released in September 2025. Featuring music made across different chapters of James’s life, the ten-track record connects reflective, sample-led moments with uplifting dance arrangements. Collaborators include Shannen James, Medhanit, Anna Leeworthy, Elmar and Clea. The 2026 single “complex.x” has since extended the story, reconnecting the project with its experimental roots.

Beyond the artist project, James works extensively as a music director, producer and touring musician, with credits spanning Vera Blue, The Temper Trap, Flight Facilities, Royel Otis and Hollow Coves. His studio collaborations have included Shannen James, Chanel Loren, HARPA, Clea and Thelma Plum, among others. Both sides of his musical life feed into upsidedownhead: an ongoing pursuit of music that feels human, curious and built to last.
